Mammography

Digital Mammography:

A mammogram is an x-ray examination of the breast done in complete privacy by a specially-trained female technologist.

St. Anthony's Digital Mammography is a full-field digital capture that allows our radiologists to detect lesions at their earliest stages and offers the flexibility of a variety of views to assist in making a diagnosis.

In addition, digital mammography requires fewer call-backs because if there is an area of concern, the digital image of the breast can be sent directly to a computer monitor for review by the radiologist. If another image is needed, it can be done the same day.

Screening Mammography

The American Cancer Society guidelines recommend that women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year. Screening mammography offers the best chance of finding breast cancer early. Finding breast cancer early means more treatment options and a better chance for a cure.

Diagnostic Mammography:

Diagnostic mammograms are used to check specific breast changes found on physical exam or a screening mammogram. If you experience any of the following, please see your physician immediately:

  • Lump or swelling
  • Skin irritation or dimpling
  • Pain or tenderness in the breast
  • Unusual nipple discharge

A diagnostic mammogram requires a physician order.

The Mammography Procedure:

Two views of each breast are routine. Compression of the breast with a plastic plate is needed to get the best possible image. Compression may be uncomfortable, but it only lasts a few seconds and can be reduced at any time by patient request. A small amount of women will need further testing because of changes seen on their mammogram. The additional testing can include:

  • Magnification views
  • Ultrasound
  • MRI

Scheduling your Mammogram

Your physician may request that you have a mammogram and make arrangements for your study.

If you are 40 years of age or older, you can contact St. Anthony’s Diagnostic Scheduling directly and ask to be scheduled for a mammogram. You may only schedule yourself for a mammogram if you have no symptoms. If you are experiencing symptoms, please schedule an exam with your physician.
