Services A to Z
Lifeline Personal Response System
Service Description:
Falls can trip up people of all ages, but according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, most falls happen in the home to people age 65 and older during everyday activities. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death among those over age 80. Falls are also the leading cause of injury and hospital admission for older adults. The most common fall related injuries are fractures of the hip or wrist. Other complications from falls include dehydration and pneumonia. The longer a person is lying on the floor without assistance, the risk for these complications increases.
Studies suggest that 30 to 50 percent of the elderly fear falling. The fear of falling can cause many elders to lose confidence and restrict their activities, making them even more susceptible to falling. In a recent study of 267 older adults, those using LIFELINE reported significantly greater ability to go about their daily routine. Fear of falling is greater if an individual had difficulty getting up after a fall or was down a long time.
