Services A to Z
St. Anthony's partners with AMSOL and Anesthesia Care of Effingham to provide anesthesia services to our patients. The latest, evidence-based anesthesia techniques are utilized in the operating rooms, delivery rooms and procedure areas. The anesthesia care team at St. Anthony's consists of an anesthesiologist and certified registered nurse anesthetist who will care for the patient throughout their visit. Prior to each planned procedure, the anesthesiologist scheduled to care for the patient will conduct a pre-operative evaluation to formulate an appropriate, individualized anesthesia plan.
The anesthesiologist and patient work together to develop the best plan for their care during the procedure. The type of anesthesia is chosen based on the safety of the patient, the ability to provide a speedy recovery and allow the patient to go home sooner. There are four major types of anesthesia utlized that can be combined to best meet the patient's needs:
General anesthesia - The patient is not conscious and has complete loss of sensation. This involves inducing sleep of the whole body, and the brain.
Regional anesthesia - Local anesthetic is injected by the anesthesia care provider to provide numbness and loss of sensation to a region of the body. This could include spinal anesthesia, epidural anesthesia, or upper and lower extremity blocks. Additional intravenous medication can be given to make the patient comfortable and drowsy. These techniques often assist with the management of post-operative pain.
Monitored Anesthesia Care - During this type of anesthesia care the surgeon usually injects local anesthetic to the site of surgery to provide numbness and loss of sensation. The anesthesia care provider then supplements this with intravenous medication to make the patient comfortable and drowsy. The patient is monitored by the anesthesia care provider throughout the procedure.
Local anesthesia - Local anesthetic is injected by the surgeon to provide numbness and loss of sensation to a small area.
